This selection of tunes was put down by the three of us with two overall aims in mind. The first was to provide a recording that could serve as a companion to The Portland Collection, a book of tunes from the community of musicians who play for contra dances in Portland, Oregon. In this, we are responding to the many people from all over the country (and beyond) who own the book and who say that they would like to hear what this music sounds like off the page and in the air, where it really belongs. Our second aim carries with it no such lofty purpose. Quite simply, we love this music, we enjoy playing it together, and we took this as an opportunity to shape it, play with it, and record it formally just for the sheer fun of it.
As for the specific tunes recorded here, when the three of us made our first lists of druthers, we were delighted to see that a neat cross-section had quite accidentally fallen into place: fast tunes, slow tunes; old tunes, new tunes; composed tunes, traditional tunes; tunes foreign and domestic; jigs, reels, hoedowns, and even a waltz! This pot-pourri mirrors both The Portland Collection and Portland practice: dances in our community feature bands playing exactly this kind of diverse repertoire.
Some listeners may notice that the version of any one piece of music they hear on this recording may not sound quite like they’ve heard it from other sources—or even as it is written in the book. That’s because The Portland Collection represents only one of the many ways we play the music—both then and now. The folk process is alive and well in Portland, where musicians who play regularly with one another are putting their own stamp on continuing traditions.
We’re happy to be part of the new, the developing, and the time-honored patterns in this wonderful folk music. We hope you enjoy the results. —Clyde Curley
